A Mural That Very Few People Will See

I've spent the past week at my mother's home in Richland painting a mural on the inside of her garage.  Since most of the time, the garage door is closed, it won't be terribly visible, but that's okay.  Mom likes it, and she paid for it, so she gets to have the most enjoyment of it!

Here are some work-in-progress photos.

This is what I started with -- the wall had already been patched, primed, and prepped with some sky and sand colors.

I repainted parts of the background colors to suit the design, and added water.

This lighthouse took the longest -- there were panels on the door with curved edges that were very hard to paint over.  I did the whole thing without rulers, and am happy I wound up with pretty straight lines.

I made some modifications to the lighthouse, and then added some headlands, with another lighthouse on the right hand one.

Next came a boat, some pilings, and a beach umbrella.

And then there were the hot air balloons...these were especially difficult, as I had to climb a tall step ladder to reach these areas, up to the top step.   Finally, I put in a pelican on a piling, and a few shore birds, and called it good.

A challenging project -- glad it is done!

  1. It's always nice to see a whimbrel. Unless that's a curlew.

    1. You called it right -- Whimbrel! They are fine birds indeed.

    2. The only whimbrel I've seen (if I remember correctly) was at Newport Beach, a couple of years ago. It was early in the morning and I had gone for a run on the beach. A pair of the birds were poking in the sand right by the stairs I took to get back to the hotel. They were not spooked by my approach.

I really like the rowboat. I forgot to say that.

    3. The only place I've seen Whimbrels is Cannon Beach and they didn't seem perturbed by people there, either. Never seen any on Washington coasts -- not that I get out there that often. Maybe I should rectify that.

  3. That's a wonderful mural. And so nice, if one is heading out for a hard day or coming back from one, to see a beach and a lighthouse and a whimbrel instead of the boring garage wall.
